You & I both know you should be doing it.  You should be doing it everyday.  You shouldn't even have to think about it or intervene.  It should just happen on it's own. 

But let's be honest.  How many of us actually do it?   According to the grim statistics, even many of us running our own business, where our main source of income could be in jeopardy aren't doing it either!

What am I talking about?  I'm talking about backing up your computer, of course!  

Sure you could sign up for one of those inexpensive web based backup services like Carbonite or Mozy and manage it all yourself.  But will you?  Will you actually check to make sure everything is working as it should?  Or will you be surprised when a data loss occurs and you can't recover any of your data?  And be upset at (insert company name here) for not working and taking your money all those years... for nothing.  

If no one has ever informed you of the risks of backing up data and you have never bothered to check whether it's actually working or not, let me take this opportunity to caution you.  

Backing up your data is the easy part.  What is scary is trying to recover that data when the unthinkable happens, and you're not sure if the data will be recoverable or not.  The truth is, backups can fail, too.   Which is why you should be testing your backups periodically.

Now let's say someone broke into your home and stole not only your computer, but also the external hard drive sitting next to it where your nightly backups were stored.  What then?  What would you do?  How would you recover your data?  What would be lost?  School papers?  Financial information like your taxes or banking info?   Family memories like photos and video clips?

When it comes to data backup, I am probably more paranoid than you are.  That means even though I utilize rock solid backup technologies, I still conduct test restores periodically to ensure that your most valuable data can be recovered when it is needed.

In order to manage the backups for you, requires that I access your each computer that you would like backed up remotely.  After you sign up, I will send you a link to install remote control software on your computer.  Don't worry, we'll walk thru the setup steps for this remote control software together. 

We will then arrange a time that I can access your computer remotely to install and configure the backup software for you.  Once installed, I will receive daily reports of it's operation.  Should any prolonged errors occur, I will be in contact with you to arrange a time to troubleshoot the problem.  

Otherwise, in addition to the daily monitoring, I will be conducting an annual restore test to ensure everything is still working as expected.   Because the last thing either of us want when a real restore is required is surprises!

This service is intended to give you and your family peace of mind in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure, virus, or ransomware event.   Should the unthinkable happen, rest assured your data will be well protected.  

Having said that, however, the question then becomes what do you do with that data?  Where do you restore it to?  If your computer hardware failed, all you have to do is buy yourself a new computer, phone me, and it's a simple process to restore your data and have you up and running as before.  Restores are handled for you as part of the service.

But if your machine was compromised by a virus or ransomware event, that machine either needs to be manually cleaned, or preferably, erased and rebuilt from scratch.  Continuing to use an infected computer is asking for trouble.  It's like giving a set of house keys to the burglars that just broke into your house.  There's no guarantee that the bad guys aren't still watching what you type or monitoring the websites you visit on your computer.  

DATAVAULT can help you recover your data, but remotely I can not help you rebuild your computer or guarantee to completely eradicate a virus.  For those services you may need to enlist help from a local experienced professional.
