Subject:           Inspiration Point Hike and Oakland Peticides Petition
From:               John Bondon
Good Morning!

So far conditions are dry and skies are partly clear, so we will proceed with our plans to hike this morning. There is a major storm system brewing just off the California coast, however, so be prepared for rain by late morning or early afternoon. Bring a raincoat or umbrella, just in case. If it begins to rain, we will turn back early.

On a seperate note, I have learned about a Petition against the Ciry of Oakland, I thought you all might be interested to hear about. It relates to using toxic chemicals to control weeds in the parks and near the hiking trails we all love to use. The organization leading the fight against the use of pesticides is seeking your support, not only to help sign the online petition, but also to help make an appearance and show support at an upcoming City Council meeting. Below is a short synopsis; to learn more please visit:

The City of Oakland, which has had a ban on chemical pesticide use for several years, plans to reverse the ban and make exceptions in the Oakland parks for several types of plants.

We're asking the city to continue weeding with non chemical methods so that no one is harmed by the pesticides. There is a misconception that they can use pesticides without harming anybody.

Nobody wants weeds, but nobody wants Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Sex Hormone Disrupters, or Miscarriages either! All of which are documented effects of the proposed pesticides.

Whether you live in Oakland, visit Oakland, know people who live in Oakland or just want to encourage the Oakland City Council to set and example and do the "right thing"... Please sign the online petition to ask the City Council of Oakland to not reintroduce spraying.

As always, you'll find more details about today's hike posted on the East Bay Casual Hiking website. Remember, RAIN CANCELS.

See you at 10AM! :) John

Happy Trails,
