Subject:           Sunday hike - Pleasanton Ridge - 4 miles
From:               John Bondon
Well I goofed. I failed to check for new hikes submitted this past week so I missed one that Andrew had submitted originally for yesterday. So he is graciously rescheduling for Sunday. Details are now posted on the website.

It's been a long time since I've included hike leaders reports of our past hikes so what follows is a stroll down memory lane (last month's Memory Lane) for some of what you've been missing out on the trails. With snow predicted for our area to fall tonight, it's interesting to remember it wasn't that long ago we were walking around in tshirts and shorts!

Howard says of last month's Briones Park Bear Creek hike:
Twelve hikers participated in Thursday's hike from the Bear Creek staging area in Briones Regional Park. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the high 50's and a good breeze on the ridge top. The trails were mostly in good condition with very little muddy portions. This area appears to offer many opportunities for nice hikes so we will be returning there in the near future. The GPS indicated we traveled about 5 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain.

Andrew reports of last month's Del Valle hike:
We had 22 hikers on a beautiful 70 degree day and some of us saw the eagle. I stayed with Cheryll hiking the 500 ft hill. She hiked 2/3 of the way up but then decided it was too much and turned back. Or so I thought. She rested and then said I'm going to get to the top of this hill. And she did. She met a guy from SF who was here for our hike. Together they hiked well into the park, saw the eagle and have a picture. The rest of us rested across from the eagle nest but could not spot it. We did not see the eagle. 7 miles and about 1,200 ft of elevation gain. It's amazing what you can accomplish with determination. Cheryll sure did.
Way to go, Cheryll! For those interested, you can view a pictures of the eagle online here:

Look for more hike reports from the past month in next week's email.

A Preview of our upcoming hikes, by the hike leader(s):

Andrew says of the upcoming Pleasanton Ridge - 4 miles hike on Sunday, February 27 at 10:00 AM: "The trail should be dry and the sun shining bright. What more could you ask for?".

Andrew says of the upcoming Briones Reservoir Loop - Clockwise - Oursan Trail hike on Saturday, March 5 at 9:00 AM: "In case you have been eating doughnuts and ice cream, this is an opportunity to lose those unwanted pounds.".

Andrew says of the upcoming Mt Diablo WaterFall Trail (Regency Gate) hike on Thursday, March 10 at 10:00 AM: "The wildflowers may be blooming. They are as spectacular as the Falls.".

You'll find more details about each of these upcoming hikes, including starting time and directions to the trailhead, posted on the East Bay Casual Hiking website. In the event of rain or snow, please check with the hike leader as to whether the hike will proceed as planned.

Happy Trails! :)

Happy Trails,

John
