My apologies to anyone who tried to access the hiking website Sunday. It was down for the count, failing overnight during a routine backup procedure. I do receive automated alerts when problems such as this develop. Unfortunately I was out of town this past weekend without internet access and unable to respond. I was also sick Sunday night so I didn't fully address this until Monday morning.
The computer hardware the hiking website runs on is due for replacement but is currently a low priority project so will probably be awhile before this can be fully resolved. In the meantime I have minimized what automated jobs run in the wee hours of Sunday and Thursday mornings, the seemingly most popular of our hiking days. Even so, an error occurred this past wekeend that caused significant downtime for the hiking server.
The are a few other lingering issues to be addressed that may cause further downtime, though I hope brief. Please bear with me in the coming weeks as I try to tackle each one in the hopes of restoring reliability back to the hiking website.
A now on to happier thoughts. A preview of our upcoming hikes, by the hike leader(s):
Chris says of the upcoming Castle Rock hike on Thursday, August 12 at 9:00 AM: "Come gaze down opon the raptors! This hike is going to be about 6 miles with a 1000 foot elevation gain. We'll be heading up and around Castle Rock peak, with an adventure option!!! ".
Andrew says of the upcoming Del Valle hike on Sunday, August 15 at 9:00 AM: "Last April we not only spotted the eagle, it flew right over us. To say it is big and brown is an understatement. It can get hot here so be prepared.".
You'll find more details about each of these upcoming hikes, including starting time and directions to the trailhead, posted on the East Bay Casual Hiking website. In the event of rain, please check with the hike leader as to whether the hike will proceed as planned.
Happy Trails! :)
