Subject:           Mount Diablo Sunday and a word about Saturday hikes
From:               John Bondon
Yes there is a hike this weekend, weather permitting, of course! But before we talk about that, first let's look back to last weekend's hike from Andrew:
We had 6 hikers (including 5 hike leaders) plus an energetic dog named Sparkles. This was so easy and we all stayed together, except when Sparkles decided to jump into the pond and chase the ducks. It was muddy the whole way. I almost fell down a couple of times. My friends laughed and said that I had to learn to hike in "high heels". We started out in sunshine but soon the fog rolled in. Visability was about 100'. I was the only one who knew the trail, but we all had maps (and used them). It was a fun hike.
Thanks for the great report, Andrew!

Over the past few weeks, I've gotten several emails from people asking for "more Saturday hikes, please!". True our tradition has been to hike on Sundays... and that tradition started simply because I was initially the one who led all the hikes and Sunday was my only free day. But nowadays, we have more people willing to lead hikes, and many of those hikes have NOT been on Sunday. So out of curiousity I counted how many Saturday hikes we had last year and it turned out to be 21! When you consider there are only 52 weeks in a year, that means that close to half of the weekend hikes offered last year were opportunities to hike on a Saturday!! (By the way, in addition to our 21 Saturday hikes last year, there were also 10 weekday hikes in 2007.)

So that got me thinking: are people simply not aware of all the past Saturday hikes we've had or are they just wanting MORE? ;) Unfortunately I can't help you with the MORE for now, as the availability of Saturday hikes really depends on our hike leaders, and their willingness and availability to do so. But I decided to start mentioning the DAY of each upcoming hike in these emails to better clarify things. For those that read the email but never visit the website for more information, hopefully that will help alert you to the hiking day of your choice that you seek. :)

And with that, a preview of our next hike:

Helene says of the upcoming Mount Diablo Summit via Juniper Camp/Back Creek Trail hike on Sunday at 8:30 AM: "Start the new year with a peak experience - the Mount Diablo Summit. Burn off those holiday calories, and see some of the most beautiful scenery visible from the East Bay. Trekking poles recommended. Bring lunch, fluids, and layers.". Torrential rain will cancel this hike; light rain does not. Contact Helene directly Sunday morning if unsure of conditions.

You'll find more details about this upcoming hike posted on the East Bay Casual Hiking website.

Happy Trails! :)

Happy Trails,
