Subject: Wednesday WEEKDAY hike this week!
From: John Bondon
Another great hike this past weekend, I hear, but with a little extra drama at the end. As Andrew reports:
"We started out with 32 hikers on another spectacular day. That quickly grew to ~40 due to late arrivals. Will and Judith helped out with leading. Too many hikers for the two of us. Great hike.
There was a group of 4 hikers (who carpooled to Macedo) that decided on the Barbeque Terrace trail that they didn't want to go any further and would return to Macedo by them selves. They told Howard of their plans. 3 women and a man. One of the women (Heather) decided she wanted to run back to Macedo, which she did. She then waited for her friends. She was still waiting when our group returned to Macedo. She then retraced her steps to where her group had started back. No sign of her friends. I suspect they missed the Dusty trail and continued on towards Castlerock. But that is just a guess. These folks did not respond to cell phone calls."
A follow up email and phone chat with Heather resulted in good news. She reported that all came back safe and sound. Matter of fact, the "lost" enjoyed their little detour and had no idea they were considered "Missing In Action" ... so all ended well. :)
My special thanks to Andrew, Howard and Heather, for taking the extra time and effort to try to locate the missing hikers. Our group doesn't have an official checkin/checkout procedure as it is fairly routine for attendees to leave early or occasionally veer off course and do their own thing. That's fine. We are all adults and as such, I expect each of us to take responsibility for ourselves and our own safety. After all, no one knows your limits better than yourself! But at the same time I think it makes for a better group and a better society when we are all looking out for each other as well. So my thanks particularly to our hike leaders for their willingness to stick around the extra hour until help arrived.
A Preview of some of our upcoming hikes, by the hike leader(s):
Andrew says of the upcoming Ringtail Cat hike tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10AM: "At the request of several hikers, I have submitted a hike for this wednesday. Can anybody besides Howard tell me what a Ring Tail cat is?".
Helene says of her upcoming Mitchell Canyon, Deer Flat, Back Creek Loop hike on Saturday, October 13th (9AM): "Join us for a beautiful hike around the Mitchell Canyon, Deer Flat, and Back Creek Trails. This is one of the best times of year at the Mountain. But just in case it's unseasonably warm, there will be plenty of shade. Make your own carpool arrangements with other members of the group, or friends.".
A great way to arrange carpools, if you are not already aware, is to take advantage of the Member's Only Email List. But you must first be a member of it in order to exchange emails with other members of the group. Click the "Modify my Settings" link contained in this email to check if you are already subscribed to the Member's Only list.
Tennis season is now fully underway, and unfortunately for me this year that means many of my matches fall on a Sunday, so my attendence at hikes may be rather sparse for a while. If anyone would like to lead a hike this weekend, don't be shy! Use the "LEAD A HIKE" link on the Upcoming Hikes page to submit your own hike!
You'll find more details about the upcoming hikes (mentioned aboved) posted on the East Bay Casual Hiking website.
Happy Trails! :)
