Event Notes:

A moderate 7-mile, 1000-foot elevation gain loop hike from Castle Rock Park to Macedo Ranch with an option to add a 2-mile, 400-foot elevation gain loop. Or the easier option for a 5.5-mile, 400-foot elevation gain out-and-back hike returning from the Dusty Road junction. The route to Macedo Ranch will be via Stage Road (Pine Creek), and Dusty and Wall Point Roads. After a rest/snack stop, return via Wall Point Road, Briones Mt. Diablo and Little Yosemite Trails, and Stage Road to Castle Rock Park. The optional added loop will be on the Shell Ridge Loop Trail. Water, restrooms and picnic tables are available at Castle Rock Park and Macedo Ranch. No dogs are allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park. The trailhead address is 1700 Castle Rock Road, Walnut Creek. Meet at the restrooms about 1/4 mile from the trailhead.

Trail Notes:

We will hike from Castle Rock Park to Macedo Ranch and return. Distance is about 6 miles with elevation gain of about 750 feet. Water, restrooms, and picnic tables at both sites. We will take a short rest/snack stop at Macedo Ranch. Outbound will be via Stage Rd to Dusty Rd to Macedo Ranch. Return will be via Briones/Mount Diablo, Little Yosemite and Stage Rd.

From 24 Fwy take the I-680 N exit on the LEFT toward SACRAMENTO/CONCORD and then exit at Ygnacio Valley Rd. From 680 Fwy exit at Ygnacio Valley Rd. Turn RIGHT onto Ygnacio Valley Rd and drive 2.2 miles to Walnut Ave. Turn RIGHT on Walnut Ave and drive 1.6 miles to the roundabout and take the first exit onto Oak Grove Rd. From Ygnacio Valley Rd westbound, turn LEFT onto Oak Grove Rd and drive for 1.1 miles to the roundabout. From the roundabout, Oak Grove Rd becomes Castle Rock Rd. Drive for 2.1 miles to the Park. Limited parking is available at the end of Castle Rock Rd but ther is additional parking at the Orchard Staging Area on the right before the end of the road.
