Event Notes:

Maguire Peaks

A Challenging 10 mile/2500ft hike from the main staging area over and around Maguire Peaks. This hike explores some of the prettiest, isolated, single-track trails of Sunol Regional Wilderness.

From the main staging area we cross Alameda Creek and head up and over to Welch Creek road on Flag Hill, Flag Hill Loop, and the new Welch to Flag Hill Trails. A short walk on Welch Creek road brings us to Lower Maguire Peaks Trail, where we begin a shaded ascent to the Maguire Peaks Loop Trail. From here we circumnavigate Maguire Peaks in a clockwise direction while enjoying the great views of Sunol Valley, San Antonio Reservoir, and the Livermore Valley.

After a snack break we will return along Maguire Peak Trail to Welch Creek road for another short walk along Welch Creek road to High Valley, and Hayfield road trails for the descent to the staging area.

An optional 8 mile/2100ft shorter hike without circling Maguire Peaks is available for those who choose it.

As usual please ignore the trail notes below. We will meet near the toilets just past the visitors center by the foot bridge crossing Alameda Creek.

Leader: Joel Schantz

Trail Notes:

This is a difficult hike. 10.5 miles and 2,200 feet of elevation gain. Shade to start but then it is all sun. It's similiar to hiking to Juniper Camp from Mitchell Canyon. Be prepared. Potties and water at the start. It's dog friendly, but I would be cautious. Fee for dogs $2. Hiking poles are a plus.

Trailhead Directions:

Exit 680 (either direction) at Calaveras Rd. From 680S you want to go under the frewway. From 680N you want to exit right. About 4 miles along Calaveras to Geary Rd. Take it into the Park. Watch out for bikers after 680. It is a winding road.

Parking Fee: $6
Other Fees: $2 Ohlone permit
