Sunday, June 16, 2013 @ 8:15 AM
A strenuous, 18-mile out-and-back hike from Sunol to Rose Peak. Similar to a Mt. Diablo Summit hike, only longer. An all-day, strenuous hike with about a 3400-foot elevation gain. For experienced hikers only. Ohlone Wilderness Permits ($2), available at the entrance kiosk, are required for each hiker. Meet at the end of the road past the Visitor Center. Route will be via the Camp Ohlone Road, past Little Yosemite Falls to Backpack Road and past the Sunol Backpack Camp to McCorkle Trail (red on the map). Continue on McCorkle Trail passing OT19, OT20, OT21, OT22, OT23, OT24, OT25, OT26, and OT27 to Rose Peak. Return in the opposite direction. Hikers are free to turn back if weather becomes too hot or hike is too tough, but they must be responsible for themselves. Just be sure to keep on the correct route. Water (untreated) and toilets are available near the Backpack Camp, near OT26 (Doe Canyon Horse Camp) and at Maggies Half Acre near Rose Peak. Bring adequate water and food for the day.
