Trail Notes:

This 12 mile round trip hike has a lot to offer: scenic lakes, peaceful douglas fir forests, and beautiful views of Marin County and Mt. Tamalpais. While we will be hiking at a leisurely to moderate pace, this hike is not for beginners because of the 2000 foot elevation gain between Ross and Potrero Meadow. Our route will take us west along Lagunitas Road to Natalie Coffin Greene Park. From there, we will continue west on trail upward to Phoenix and Bon Tempe lakes and then to Potrero Meadow where we will rest at Rifle Picnic Area before turning around. The weather on this hike can change from hot to cold so bring a wind breaker or sweater as well as a hat and sunblock. Also, bring at least 2 liters of water per person, sports drink if you sweat a lot, and snacks some of which should be salty. Plan on spending around 5 hours for this hike.

From the East Bay, take I-80 east toward Sacramento. Then take I-580 west towards Point Richmond/San Rafael. Cross the San Rafael Bridge ($3 toll). Exit Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Drive west on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard through Larkspur for about 2 miles. You will see U.S. 101. Don't get on this freeway. Instead, stay in the lane that says Kentfield/Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. After passing underneath the freeway on this lane, continue driving west. You will still be on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Drive for about another 3 miles. You will reach an intersection with Lagunitas Road (by the Marin Art and Garden Center). Turn left onto Lagunitas Road. Make another immediate left onto Ross Commons and into the town of Ross. Park in a space on the street that has no time limit or in the parking lot on the left side of the street by the post office.
