Briones Reservoir Overlook hike

Briones Reservoir Overlook hike
City: Orinda/Lafayette
Region: EastBay
Park: EBMUD

Sunday, January 29, 2012 @ 9:30 AM

Event Notes:

An out-and-back hike from the Briones Overlook staging area to the Bear Creek staging area. About 7 miles with an elevation gain of 900 feet. Restrooms at both staging areas but no water. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. EBMUD hiking permits needed, but up to four guests are allowed for each permit. There should be enough permit holders to accommodate those without them. The Overlook staging area is on Bear Creek Rd about halfway between Camino Pablo and Happy Valley Rds.

Trail Notes:

This is an out and back single trail hike about 6-7 miles round trip on the Bear Creek Trail. It could go longer if we go out through the gate rather than turn around. For distance purposes, to the gate and back is slightly more than 6 miles. Going beyond the gate only takes you another 1/2 mile to a 2nd gate that doesn't appear to have any access to...however, it does take you to the Bear Creek Staging area. So going to the first gate would yield a round trip distance of about 6 miles total, whereas continuing on to the second gate yields instead about 7 miles total.

Trailhead Directions:

From highway 24, you take the Orinda BART exit and go north about 2 miles on Camino Pablo to Bear Creek Rd. (LIGHT). Camino Pablo is called Moraga Way south of the BART. Right on Bear Creek about 1+ miles to the Overlook staging area on the left. Easy to miss.

Other Fees: EBMUD permit required
