Del Valle

Del Valle
City: Livermore
Region: EastBay
Park: Del Valle Regional Park

Sunday, January 23, 2011 @ 10:00 AM

Event Notes:

The purpose of this hike is to see the nesting bald eagles on the opposite shore of the Lake just past the 3 mile mark. The trail is mostly sun. We climb a 500 foot hill right at the start so we will climb slowly. The views from the top are magnificent. We eventually drop down to lake level. My intention is to make this a 6 to 8 mile hike. Elevation gain is about 1,000 ft. It is dog friendly. One picnic table and Porta Potty at the parking lot. The parking machine hasn't worked in years. Bring singles just in case.

Trail Notes:

We'll do the East Shore Trail off of Arroyo Road Staging Area. It goes along a ridge above Heron Bay and Swallow Bay at the huge lake at Del Valle Regional Park. We can do the full 10 mile round trip to Badger Cove, or turn around earlier depending on the groups ambition. Overall, should take 4 to 5 hours. Bring snacks/lunch!

UPDATE! A friend of mine who is familiar with the Del Valle route we are doing has added these comments. Apparently the parking fee will only be $2 instead of $6. My mistake. Her comments below..…

The parking fee at the Arroyo entrance is only $2.00, the other entrance is the $6 one. It's better to park in the lot than down the street. You'll probably not get very good cell coverage out there, so I'd let people know the road basically dead ends at this entrance, the dam entrance. They're going in the right direction if they see signs for the VA and Taylor Family camp and drive past the Wente Winery, restaurant and golf course.

Trailhead Directions:

Directions: 580 towards Livermore. Take Portola Ave exit. Drive SE on Portola Ave and turn right on North L Street. After crossing First St., North L St. becomes South L St. and then Arroyo Road. Continue on Arroyo Road past Sycamore Grove and the US Veterans Admin Hospital, all the way to the end. The staging area is on the left. It is $6 to park in the staging area, but you can park in other areas up the road if you are willing to walk a bit. Apparently there is no parking on Arroyo Road.

Parking Fee: $2
