This is one of my 5 favorite hikes. It is the last Lake hike. It is all ups and downs, featuring Killer Hill. 6.5 miles and at least 1,500 ft of elevation gain. Not for begginers. No services at the start but in the park. Dog friendly. Mostly fire road except for the start. Perfect prelude to a barbeque afternoon.

The Lafayette Reservoir is situated in the Lamorinda area. There are two main trails -- the bottom paved trail and the unpaved upper rim trail. The rim trail offers great views of the reservoir and the surrounding hills, has some shady areas but is mostly in the sun. I would call it moderately difficult hike, but has quite a few steep up and down hill areas. There are toilets and drinking water in a couple of places.
The Rim Trail is a dirt trail. This hike is 4.7 miles in length. Unlike the lower paved route around the reservoir, the rim trail has a lot of ups and downs, including some rather steep grade portions. Overall this trail is fairly moderate for the avid hiker, but could be quite challenging for the novice or newbie. There are two stops where water and toilet facilities are available.
