Event Notes:
This is the first of 3 hikes we will do to get us to the Diablo Summit. If you have wanted to do this, this is your chance. We first hike to Deer Flat. Next to Juniper Camp and finally the summit. You can do it , please try. We will assist you. We hike up Mitchell along fireroads to Deer Flat. Wildflowers near Deer Flat. Be prepared for changeable weather.

Trail Notes:

This is a beautiful 7 mile round trip hike on the north side of Mt. Diablo with a 1900 foot climb. Plan on spending 4 hours to complete this hike. We will take a break at Deer Flat before going back. Since we plan on hiking at an easy pace, it shouldn't be a problem if you are in good physical shape. The hike follows a smooth dirt road through a shady canyon and up a sunny mountain dotted with pine trees. The canyon views are spectacular. The first two miles are easy walking with an elevation gain of 400 feet, but feel almost flat. The final mile-and-a-half is all uphill, takes an hour, and gains 1500 feet. Dogs are not permitted on Mt. Diablo State Park trails. Bring exact change and a pen to fill out the self-parking envelope. Meet in front of the Mitchell Canyon Interpretive Center.

Trailhead Directions:

From I-680 North or Hwy 24 East, exit at Ygnacio Valley Road. Turn right (east) on Ygnacio Valley Road to Clayton Road in Concord (approx 7.5 miles) and turn right (east).

From I-680 South, exit at Treat Blvd. Turn left (south) at the stop light, then immediate left (east) at the next stop light (Treat Blvd). Follow Treat all the way up the hill into Concord (approx 8 miles). Turn right (east) onto Clayton Road.

Follow Clayton Road to Mitchell Canyon Road and turn right (south). The road ends in the park at a parking lot.
