Diane's Castle Rock Loop

City: Walnut Creek
Region: EastBay
Park: EBRPD

Friday, December 25, 2009 @ 8:00 AM

Event Notes:

This loop is about 10+ miles, meanders on about 4 or 5 different trails, and because of some significant elevation gain -- about 1300 feet -- it is recommended for EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY who know their ability. If you have never been to Castle Rock Park, please allow plenty of time to find the staging area...it is at the very END of the road past a staging area that you will see on your right. We will begin our hike at 8:00 a.m. SHARP! The staging area is past both horse stables at the end of the road. I anticipate this hike taking approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. While there may be some mud from past weeks' rains, I anticipate the trails being quite nice by Friday. If you are not familiar with this trail, please come prepared with a map of the area.

Trail Notes:

This is a variation of the usual Castle Rock hike -- and much longer and with more elevation gain. Rather than an out and back, we are making this a loop, going on about 5 different trails. The mileage is approximately 10 miles with an elevation gain of about 1300 feet (total elevation 1600 feet). This hike should ONLY be attempted by experienced hikers who thoroughly know their own ability. If in doubt, please do not attempt. Dogs are permitted but must be leased and under voice control at any posted area or parking lot. Please be aware we may encounter poison oak on the single track trails, so wear long pants and sleeves if you are not sure how to spot and avoid poison oak.

Trailhead Directions:

From Walnut Creek, head east towards Concord on Ygnacio Valley Road. Turn RIGHT onto Oak Grove Road. (From Concord, Pittsburg, etc. take Ygnacio Valley Road westbound down the hill into Walnut Creek. Turn LEFT onto Oak Grove Road.) OAK GROVE ROAD becomes CASTLE ROCK ROAD at turn-about (at Walnut AVENUE). Proceed straight thru turnabout onto Castle Rock Road. Go past Northgate High School. Continue to the end. Do not park in the first lot on the right. Go all the way to the end and park in the dirt, near entrance to Castle Rock Park (pass two horse stables).

Parking Fee: None
