Event Notes:

This will be a 5+ mile hike. We will hike Fossil Hill, Indian Creek and wherever else we want to go. There may be fog early, but it will clear. This hike is from Walnut Blvd, not Walnut Ave. WB is close to 680. WA is close to Concord. This hike is very dog friendly, (they are allowed off leash). This hike is in EBRP not EBMUD. No permits needed.

Trail Notes:

It is an easy hike on Shell Ridge in Walnut Creek. About 6 miles and less than 500' of elevation gain. Water, restrooms, and picnic tables both at the start and mid points, so bring snack food.

For hikers, the six-and-a-half acre Howe Homestead Park is next to the Shell Ridge Open Space preserve. Hikers can start on the Kovar Trail and walk to the crest of Mount Diablo 10 miles away.

Trailhead Directions:

From 680 South or 24 East, exit at Ygnacio Valley Rd. and go EAST (turn RIGHT), traveling 0.9 miles to Walnut Blvd. Turn right and go 0.6 miles to the park on your left.

If you are coming from the east, take Ygnacio Valley Road eastbound and be careful not to take Walnut Ave. It doesn't go anywhere near the park. Walnut Blvd. is very close to the pedestrian overcrossing at Civic Drive. Turn left onto Walnut Blvd. Homestead Park will be on your left shortly after crossing the intersection with Homestead Avenue.
