Event Notes:

Meet at the Wolverton parking lot. We will hike at a casual, touristy pace, sticking together as a group. Touristy means we will pause often to snap photos and enjoy the beautiful scenery around us! So bring your camera, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities! For those that wish to venture faster, bring your own 2-way radio as well - REQUIRED!

Trail Notes:

This hike follows the Lakes Trail and Alta Trail to Panther Gap and Mehrten Meadow. Panther Gap sits on a ridge nearly 5,000 feet above the Middle Fork Kaweah River Canyon. The spectacular views include Castle Rocks and the 12,000-foot jagged peaks of the Great Western Divide. Mehrten Meadow is a small meadow tucked into a forested bowl alongside Mehrten Creek.

Total hiking distance will be 8 miles round trip (approximately 4-5 hours), with an elevation gain of 1800 feet.

The parks lie in the southern Sierra Nevada, east of the San Joaquin Valley.

Because these parks vary from low to very high elevations, you can find a variety of climates here - all on the same day! Be prepared with layers of clothing.

Cell phones: Cell phones generally don't work in the parks because of the rugged terrain. Use of 2-way radios highly advised.

Complete details about preparing for this trip, including where to stay and what to bring, can be found in the Information Packet - PDF file. Additional overnight accomodation choices can be found here.
