Event Notes:

This is a 6 mile up and down hike on the upper rim trail. Not easy. We can split into 2 groups; those that want to do the easy lake level trail, and the rest of us rim hikers. At the halfway point, we will pause at the Ranger station for snacks, while Howard and I renew our EBMUD hiking permits. $10 for one year; a bargain. We will not park at the main entrance, but at Via Granada (right) from Moraga Rd. (Street parking - see directions below) Water and restrooms on the trail. Hike is all sun. Hike is doggie friendly (leashed). Free parking.

Trail Notes:

This is a fairly easy to moderate hike that begins uphill along a shaded path. During the rainy season this trail can become quite muddy and slippery, so proceed with caution. This hike can be done as an in and out type hike, returning via this same trail back to our cars; or as a loop hike, returning by way of the surrounding residential streets. The hike can also be extended by looping around the entire Rim Trail. Moraga Road to Lafayette Rim Trail is .62 miles one way. Upper Trail at Lafayette Reservoir is the Rim Trail and is a dirt trail. The Rim portion of this hike is 4.69 miles in length. Unlike the lower paved route around the reservoir, the rim trail is a lot of up and down, including some rather steep grade portions. Overall I consider this trail to be fairly moderate for the avid hiker, but could be quite challenging for the novice or newbie. There are, however, many "turn-offs" leading back to the paved trail for someone who decides to venture onto Rim and decide they would rather go back to the Paved Trail. Plan 90 minutes to 3 hours to complete this trail, depending on your pace.
