Trail Notes:

Expect a challenging hike with 9.2 miles total distance and a climb of 1,900 feet. This is an exceptional hike, especially in spring, with masses of wildflower displays and rushing streams. The single-track trail winds eastward through the foothill meadows to Back Creek.

We'll follow the creek crossing it several times before we climb to Murchio Gap, a steady uphill, and rocky trail with very little shade. We'll then take a seldom used and unmarked Deer Flat Creek Trail to Meridian and then to Deer Flat (Elev. 2,120). Deer Flat is one of the prettiest spots on Mt. Diablo with sweeping views of Clayton below, the west delta, and the hills of Napa and Solano Counties, as well as North Peak and Mt. Diablo's summit. Just below Deer Flat are two picnic tables where we'll break for lunch. The variety of trees, chaparral, and wildflowers will astound you: Ithuriel's Spear, Indian Paintbrush, Scarlet Larkspur, Wild Pansy, Bush Sunflower, Chinese Houses, Clematis, the elusive Mt. Diablo Globe Lily and more. We'll return via Mitchell Canyon Road - all down hill!

Trailhead facilities: Picnic Tables, water, toilets.
