Event Notes:

Buckeye Ranch and Russell Peak

We'll hike from the Bear Creek side of Briones starting at 9:00am . A choice of a moderate 6 mile/1200' shorter hike or a challenging 7.6 mile/1900' long hike.

Route is Old Briones Road, right at post #5 to Crescent Ridge. At the junction of Briones Crest and Sunrise #71 the two hikes split. The short hike turns right on Briones Crest continuing all the way to Russell Peak for a break. Return the way you came turning left on Seaborg at post #70. Turn left on Bear Creek Trail #79 and back to the parking area. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO POISON OAK please wear long pants or forego Bear Creek Trail by continuing on Seaborg, then left and back the way we started.

The long hike turns left on Briones Crest #71 then straight onto Sunrise Trail #58. At the end turn right on Upper Buckeye Ranch, then left across the creek 1/4 mile in. Turn right on Lower Buckeye Ranch along the creek. Once you come to the junction of both Buckeye Ranch trails turn left and enjoy your climb to Lafayette Ridge. Turn right on Lafayette Ridge #68 for a steep climb up to a left on Russell Peak trail #69. Find a single track 1/4 mile down on the left to the peak and enjoy a break at the table. Follow the short route back.

Please note: This group does not stay together on the hike instead relying on arrows put on the ground with flour to mark turns. You are encouraged to stay with others who are hiking your speed and you should also carry the trail route map either downloaded to your phone or in paper form.

Trail Notes:

Briones' 6,255 acres are home to many animals and birds, which forage on the grasslands or find shelter among the oaks and bays. You may see black-tailed deer, coyotes, squirrels, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and, if you are lucky, other more reclusive creatures. There are gorgeous wildflower displays in season.
