Event Notes:

Choose either a 6 mile 1,000 foot or a 7.25 mile 1,300 foot elevation gain loop hike starting in JMLTs Fernandez Ranch just off HWY 4. This can be a difficult trailhead to find, directions below are very good or use 1015 Christie Road, Martinez for GPS. Route will be Windmill Trail, right onto Woodland Trail. At the end of Woodland Trail short hike will go through the gate and turn left on Franklin Ridge Trail. Long hike will not go through the gate but turn right uphill onto Canyon Loop Trail, then up Vista Trail pausing at the top to take in the view, back down Vista Trail, left on Franklin Ridge Trail. Both hikes continue on Franklin Ridge Trail, reentering Fernandez Ranch at the second gate. Sharp right onto Woodrat Trail, Whipsnake Trail, stopping at Viewpoint Bench to snack. Return continues on Whipsnake Trail and Black Phoebe Trail back to the cars. Pit toilet but no water at trailhead.

Trail Notes:

Fernandez Ranch was purchased by the Muir Heritage Land Trust and opened to the public in June 2010. It's pastoral beauty with green, rolling hills is remeniscent of the Sierra foothills with an old cargo train line running through and cows that are not yet accustomed to humans and give you a wide berth when they see you. The railroad whistle sounds as you traverse the meadows and shaded woods spotting turkeys and quail who are also skittish and duck for cover. There is no potable water or restrooms as this area is remote and rustic so be prepared and bring adequate water and snacks to nibble on as we meander this undiscovered wonderland. Hiking boots and poles, if you have them, are recommended mainly becaused the terrain is uneven, especially on Windmill which is our ending trail.
