Knobcones and Balancing Rocks Hike

NOTE EARLIER START TIME!! Join us for a hike on Mount Diablo at 9:00 am. Hiker's choice of a moderately challenging 6.5 mile/1600' short hike or a challenging 8.3/2000' hike. Please note: This hike involves a detour through a washed out creek bed and involves a little bit of climbing down and back up.

Please either print out or download to your phone the trail route map here. Starting at Rock City, the hike starts on the Trail Through Time near the Big Rock picnic area, cross South Gate Road and continue past the restrooms on Madrone Canyon Trail. Continue to the Sycamore Creek intersection, where you must climb through a washed out creek bed, turning left. Continue straight on Blackhawk Ridge Road up to a 5-way intersection, the hikes diverge here. Short hike will turn hard left on Utility Road. Not quite to the end you will find an unmarked single track trail off to the left, take it. This trail winds up through the chapparal and some great rock formations climbing toward Knobcone Point. When you hit a fire road, turn left on the Utility Road. At the top, turn left on Knobcone Point Road and continue to Balancing Rock for a snack break. Continue on Knobcone Point for 2 miles, then straight onto Curry Canyon Road and through the parking lot at Curry Point. Stay on the right side of South Gate Road, then cross at the crosswalk and continue on Camp Force Trail. Turn left to go down Summit Trail, it will bring you down to South Gate Road, then back to the right. At a junction with Summit, Wall Point Road and the Trail Through Time, continue on Summit down below Sentinel Rock. Continue into the Live Oak Campgrounds. Please stop here and enjoy some baked goods at Steve's campsite (the big one by the fallen Oak Tree). Continue up the campground roadway, then back up the roadway to the start.

The long hike turns slight right on Black Hills Road, right on Black Hawk Ridge Road to the top for a break. Loop around and back down, then follow the directions for the short hike above. Flour arrows will mark your route.

Please note: This group does not stay together on the hike instead relying on arrows put on the ground with flour to mark turns. You are encouraged to stay with others who are hiking your speed and you should also carry the trail route map (link above) either downloaded to your phone or in paper form.
