Event Notes:

Sibley Volcanic - McCosker Loop Hike

A two-for-one hike of EBRPD Sibley Volcanic and Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserves. We'll 'round the top' then descend into Huckleberry and Pinehurst road to do the McCosker Loop, finishing up through Huckleberry and Skyline Blvd. Your choice hikes of
short 6.5 mile, 1400 ft or
long 8.3 mile, 1700 ft

Starting from the Sibley Staging area we head out on Round Top Loop Trail circling Round Top Peak in a clockwise direction. We turn left on the Bay Area Ridge Trail/Skyline Trail to descend to Lower Pinehurst Trail along San Leandro Creek to Pinehurst Road. We then very carefully walk, on the left side of the road, along Pinehurst Canyon road for 0.22 miles to the Wilcox Staging Area. We reenter Sibley Preserve and follow McCosker Trail up to a loop junction above a large metal shed. Continuing straight in a clockwise direction on the McCosker Loop Trail until we return to this point. Depending on the weather we'll stop to snack at the top of the hill, or further down where there is a shaded table.

After passing through the (loop) gate, we turn left and return to the Wilcox Staging Area. Now we turn right onto Pinehurst Canyon Road, again walking along the left shoulder very carefully back to Lower Pinehurst Trail. After 0.25 mile on Lower Pinehurst Trail we take the left fork of the Bay Area Ridge Trail up into Huckleberry Preserve. After 0.1 mile the shorter hike stays right at the junction, ascending to a right into the Huckleberry Staging Area.

The longer hike turns left at the junction, following the Bay Area Ridge for 1 mile to a sharp right onto the Huckleberry Path Trail. The Huckleberry Path takes us to the Huckleberry Staging Area after another mile, where we rejoin the shorter hike for the return to Sibley.

Both hikes follow the no-name path for 0.2 mile past the staging area toilet until it exits onto Skyline Blvd. We now carefully walk on the shoulder of Skyline Blvd. back to our cars.

Note: Dogs are not allowed in Huckleberry or along the McCosker Trail.
