Event Notes:

Black Diamond Coal Canyon Hike

Join us at 9:00am for the first hike in Black Diamond Mines this year! As the weather promises to cool down in East County, we'll test our luck that it will stay that way come Sunday. A hiker's choice of a moderately challenging 6 mile/1600' or a challenging 7 mile/1900', we will meet at the upper parking lot at the end of the road. For driving directions click here.

Please download and print out the route map here. Route will be Somersville to the Visitor Center, up the stairs, right on Chapparal Loop, right over bridge, up connector trail to Black Diamond, right on Black Diamond Tr, left on Nortonville, left on Black Diamond Tr, straight onto Coal Canyon. Veer right at top of the hill by Jim's Place, then left on Black Diamond Way (paved), continue left on Black Diamond Trail (dirt) at top of hill, continue for a mile. We'll take a break at the rocks just before Manhattan Canyon Trail.

Continue right on Manhattan Canyon Trail, the routes split here. The short hike continues straight on Manhattan Canyon until reaching a T-junction, right, then right onto Nortonville Trail, left on Somersville back to the start. The long hike turns right on Chapparal Loop, over bridge, right on Chapparal loop up the hill and veering left as it becomes Ridge Trail at the power tower. At the top, turn sharp left on Stewartville back down, then left on Pittsburg Mine, right at T-junction, over foot bridge, right on connector trail, right on Somersville back the way you started.

Dogs welcome, facilities located at the trailhead only. Flour arrows will guide your route and detailed maps available. If you arrive at the entrance kiosk before 9 am you will often get in for free. For driving directions click here.
