IGNORE TRAIL NOTES

An 8+ mile, 1400-ft elevation gain hike from Clayton to Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.

From Peacock park-and-ride walk to Mt. Diablo to Black Diamond trailhead, continue for 2.25 miles, right on Cumberland Trail, left on Black Diamond Trail continuing past Coal Canyon Trail junction towards Nortonville Townsite, right on Coal Canyon Trail, stopping at Jims Place for a short rest/snack stop.

Continue on Coal Canyon Trail, left on Black Diamond Trail, right on Cumberland Trail, left on Mt. Diablo to Black Diamond Trail for return to parking lot.

No facilities on the hike.

This is a moderate loop hike of approximately 10+ miles. Elevation gain of appx 1400ft

From Trail head in CLAYTON, Black Diamond Trail to Black Diamond Way, Right/South onto NortonVille Rd. continue thru Nortonville, down hill passing Rose Hill Cemetery into the the old town of Somersville, CA 94565.

(Somersville (also, Sommerville and Summerville) is an unincorporated ghost town in eastern Contra Costa County, California. It is located 6 mi north-northeast of Mount Diablo, at an elevation of 741 feet (226 m). Somersville was founded in the 1850s by gold miners. The town is no longer populated and is within the boundaries of the East Bay Regional Park District's Black Diamond Mines Regional Park.)

Return visit Rosehill cemetery. Continue west from Cemetery taking Black Diamond Trail left going south pickup the Cumberland Trail right turn going norhwest. Left/West onto Black Diamond Trail and return to cars.

Starting elevation: 500ft; Highest elevation on hike: 1615ft along Cumberland Trail.

GPS users: put in OAKHURST COUNTRY CLUB, Clayton California,,,, 37*56'21 North - 121*55'35 West

From I-680 Northbound or Hwy 24 East, exit at Ygnacio Valley Road (at Walnut Creek). At bottom of offramp at the stoplight, turn RIGHT on Ygnacio Valley Road. Proceed on Ygnacio Valley Road to Clayton Road in Concord (approx 7.5 miles) and turn right (south/east). Proceed downhill on Clayton Road into the town of Clayton.

From I-680 Southbound, exit at Treat Blvd (at Walnut Creek). Turn left at the stop light, then immediate left at the next stop light (Treat Blvd). Follow Treat all the way up the hill into Concord (approx 8 miles). Turn right onto Clayton Road. Proceed downhill on Clayton Road into the town of Clayton.

From Antioch/Pitttsburg, take Kirker Pass Road westbound and down the hill into Concord. Just past the Concord (Sleep Train) Pavilion, turn LEFT at the light at Concord Blvd. Just past Indian Wells Way, Concord Blvd becomes Oakhurst Drive. Stay on Oakhurst and get into the left lane as you approach the intersection with Clayton Road (stoplight). Turn LEFT onto CLAYTON ROAD/MARSH CREEK ROAD.

Past OakHurst Drive you will pass under an overhead sign 'Black Diamond Trail'. At the next light, turn LEFT (at the light) to turn onto Peacock Creek Drive, then an IMMEDIATE RIGHT turn into the first lot of CLAYTON PARK & RIDE.

(Meet at the park and ride and not the trail head due to very limited parking.)
