Event Notes:

Briones - Bear Creek to Russell Peak

Note: 8:30 am Start Time!!

Join us at 8:30 am for a trek through the southern end of Briones Regional; a hiker's choice of a Challenging 7.4 mile/1800' single loop or a Difficult 9.8 mile/2400' double loop. This hike is from Bear Creek Staging Area for EBRPD, not the Bear Creek for EBMUD!! We will meet at the lower parking lot of the Bear Creek Staging Area up to the right after the entrance kiosk. This is a gorgeous hike off the beaten path, but it will challenge your mettle, short or long!

Hike begins on Old Briones at the top of the upper parking area, right at the fork on Ivan Dickson/Old Briones, left on Crescent Ridge past the Archery Range, left on Briones Crest, straight onto Sunrise, right on Buckeye Ranch. We will cross over the creek, then right on Lower Buckeye Ranch which makes a hairpin turn to the right, then a sharp left to stay on Buckeye Ranch at which point we will ascend a very steep portion. Turn right to ascend the super steep Lafayette Ridge Tr. Turn left at the top on Russell Peak Tr. and ascend another hill to the top where all hikers will turn left on an unsigned single track up a small hill to a picnic table to take their rest break and enjoy the views.

Short hikers will turn back here, following the route described below. Long hikers continue on Russell Peak, left on Mariposa looping around right on a paved road and right to stay on Mariposa. At the end, turn right on Russell Peak Tr. Continue left on Russell Peak Tr. returning to Russell Peak. All hikers continue straight down Russell Peak which becomes Briones Crest, left on Seaborg, take your first left on the lovely shaded Bear Creek Trail (look for Homestead Valley camping area) back to the parking area.

Dogs welcome for $2 fee. Detailed maps will be available and the route will be marked with flour arrows along the way. We will start at 8:30 am!!

Trail Notes:

Briones' 6,255 acres are home to many animals and birds, which forage on the grasslands or find shelter among the oaks and bays. You may see black-tailed deer, coyotes, squirrels, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and, if you are lucky, other more reclusive creatures. There are gorgeous wildflower displays in season.
