Mt Diablo WaterFall Trail (Regency Gate)

NOTE: A dual-mode hike, 6-mile with 1500-foot elevation gain or 8-mile with 2000-foot elevation gain, to view the Mount Diablo Water Falls. Route will be via Donner Canyon Road, Bruce Lee, Wasserman, Cardinet Oaks, and Falls trails to the Falls where we will take a short rest/snack/photo break. Return via the Falls and Middle Trails to the Donner Canyon Road junction. This will be the decision point for the longer hike. The shorter 6-mile hike will return on Donner Canyon Road to the trailhead. The longer 8-mile hike will return via the Meridian Ridge Road, Meridian Point and Back Creek trails to the trailhead. Expect some mud from the recent rains so hiking poles are recommended. No facilities at Regency Gate and no dogs allowed in the park.

NOTE: This is the driest trail I could think of. From the main parking lot we take the paved trail up to and around the comm. tower. We take the first gate back into EBRP and continue along Rocky Ridge to the junction with the Devils Hole trail. We return the same way. Only 4 miles but about 1,500 feet of elevation.

NOTE: A moderate, 7-mile, 900-foot elevation gain, loop hike from Castle Rock Park to Macedo Ranch. The route to Macedo Ranch wil be via Stage Rd. (Pine Creek), and Dusty and Wall Point Roads. After a rest/snack stop, return via Wall Point Road, Briones - Mt. Diablo and Little Yosemite Trails, and Stage Road to Castle Rock. Water, restrooms and picnic tables are available at Castle Rock Park and Macedo Ranch. No dogs are allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park. Meet at the restrooms about ¼ mile past the trailhead. Lake Chabot (9 mile) Lake Loop

NOTE: It's time for the annual trek around the Lake. 9 miles and one 500 ft hill. Total elevation gain is around 800 ft. We will snack just past the mid point in a nice grassy meadow that we can see from the Columbine trail. There is a porta potty there. We meet at the Marina which is next to the Lake. We will hike counter clockwise from the Marina. Parking fee is about $5, + $2 for dogs. You can also park free in the street. Restrooms and snacks at the Marina.

MORGAN TERRITORY HIKE (FINLEY RD. ENTRANCE)

Route will be via Old Finley Road, Tassajara Creek Trail to the picnic table near Bobs Pond for a short rest/snack stop. There is no water anywhere on this hike even though we are next to 2 reservoirs??? Please be careful crossing San Pablo Dam Road. Vehicles are doing 60+. Weather should be cool. Please ignore the Trail Notes. They don't make any sense to me. The Event Notes are accurate.

Fossil Hill Loop Trail

Redwood Regional Park (West Loop from Redwood Gate)

NOTE: A moderate, 6-mile loop hike in Redwood Regional Park, which can be extended by hiker choice to about 7 miles. The route from Canyon Meadow will be via the Stream, Chown, and West Ridge trails to Redwood Bowl. After a short rest/snack stop, return via the Redwood Peak, French, Star Flower, and Tres Sendas trails to the Stream trail. The shorter hike participants will then return to Canyon Meadow via the Stream Trail. Those desiring more mileage and elevation gain will return via the Stream, Eucalyptus, Phillips Loop, East Ridge, Prince, and Stream trails to the staging area. There are restrooms, water, and picnic tables at the Canyon Meadow staging area and Redwood Bowl. Dogs allowed, off-leash OK on trails except the Stream Trail. The return is via Borges Ranch Trail to upper Twin Ponds Loop Trail, back to Bullfrog Pond, then retracing route back to the parking lot. Water/restrooms at Rudgear Community Park and Borges Ranch. While both start at Macedo Ranch outbound on the Wall Point Trail, the short hike descends the Secret Trail to Barbecue Terrace Road, Stage Road and Dusty Road back to Macedo Ranch. The long hike continues past the Secret Trail on Wall Point Road to Rock City, descends the Summit Trail to Live Oak Campground for a short rest/snack stop. Then returns to Macedo Ranch via the Summit Trail, Green Valley Trail and Green Valley Road. Water and restrooms at Macedo Ranch and Live Oak Campground. No dogs allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park.

Diablo, Coyote Pond, and Indian Creek trails to Marshall Dr. The extended hike will depart from Borges Ranch and head towards Castle Rock via the Borges Ranch, and Shell Ridge Loop trails to the Briones to Mt. A strenuous loop hike of almost 8 miles and about a 2000-foot elevation gain from the Mitchell Canyon staging area to Olofson Peak. And a moderate hike of about 6 miles and a 1000-foot elevation gain which omits the up-and-back portion to Olofson Peak. The route will be via Mitchell Canyon Rd,, Black Point trail to Red Rd. The strenuous hike will continue the up-and-back portion to Olofson Peak, while the moderate hike will return via Red Rd, Globe Lily trail and Mitchell Canyon Rd. to the trailhead. Return back on Wall Point Rd to the Summit and Wildcat trails to Barbecue Terrace. Continue on BBQ Terrace Rd, Stage Rd, Dusty Rd and Wall Point Rd to Macedo Ranch. If the weather is too hot, we may shorten the hike by taking the Secret Trail to BBQ Terrace Rd for the return to Macedo Ranch, omitting the hike to Rock City. Ringtail Cat to Las Trampas peak

It's the trail to Las Trampas Road in Alamo. Total miles will be 6.6 with a good deal of shade. Total elevation about 1,000 ft. Lots of poison oak along the single track Ringtail Cat trail at the start. No services at this end of the Park. Bring lots of fluids. This hike is dog friendly.

Mission Peak Regional Preserve

NOTE: Full Moon Hike! This is a strenuous 6-mile out-and-back hike. Approximately a 2000-foot elevation gain to the peak! Come prepared with plenty of water and a snack. We'll rest and snack at the peak for a bit to enjoy the sunset, moonrise and scenery. Sunset at 8:12 and moonrise at 9:29. Bring a flashlight! It can be hot at the start but cold and windy at the peak, so dress in layers. Plan on arriving at least 15 minutes early because the parking lot will likely be full. Street parking is available about a block down from the lot. Nearby address is 1874 Stanford Ave, Fremont.

NOTE: A two-version, loop hike. The full version is a strenuous, almost 7-mile, 2000-foot elevation gain, loop hike to Devils Hole, the lowest point in the park. The lite version is about 5-miles long with a 1000-foot elevation gain. Both versions take the Ridge View Trail (along the paved road to the Comm tower), continuing on the Rocky Ridge Trail to the Sycamore Trail. The full version descends on the Sycamore Trail to Devils Hole where there will be a short rest/snack stop. Then return up the Devils Hole Trail to the Rocky Ridge Trail, continuing on to the Elderberry Trail for the return to the parking lot. The lite version continues past the Sycamore Trail on the Rocky Ridge Trail to the Elderberry Trail for the downhill return to the parking lot. Water and toilets at the parking lot. Dog friendly, off-leash is OK on the trails.

Starting out with the CASTLE ROCK TRAIL we pick up STAGE ROAD to BBQ TERRANCE to WILDCAT TRAIL to the SUMMIT TRAIL on to the summit of MNT DIABLO @ 3,849 FT. Distance is about 12 miles with 3,475ft elevation gain. There are restrooms and water at the staging area, the summit and the lower parking lot on the summit No dogs allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park. The route is via Back Creek Rd and Back Creek trail to Murchio Gap, where we will take a short rest/snack break. Return via Ridge Rd and Donner Canyon Rd to Regency. Shorter loops may be hiked by turning off from the Back Creek Trail onto either the Tickwood (3+ miles, 600 feet) or Meridian Point (4+ miles, 600 feet) trails. There are no facilities available on this hike, so bring adequate water and snacks. Dogs are not allowed in Mt Diablo State Park.

NOTE: A moderate, 5+-mile, partial loop hike with about a 1000-foot elevation gain to Castle Rock Park. Route will be Sugar Loaf - Shell Ridge, Twin Ponds, Twin Ponds Loop, Borges Ranch, Briones to Mt Diablo, Shell Loop, Stage Rd, and Castle Rock trails to Castle Rock Park. A short rest/snack stop and then return via Stage Rd, Shell Ridge Loop, Briones to Mt Diablo, Borges Ranch, and north Twin Ponds Loop trails to the trailhead. No facilities at the trailhead, but full facilities at Castle Rock Park. Dog friendly, off-leash OK on the trails. The trailhead is at very end of Rockspring Pl with a nearby address of 1880 Rockspring Pl, Walnut Creek.

Lime Ridge (Arbolado Park)

NOTE: In addition to the longer hike, there will also be an easy 4 mile hike with 300 ft of elevation. This is ideal for folks just starting to hike and for kids. Bring those kids. Latest forecast says partly cloudy. Several of us may go for coffee afterwards. If the parking lot is full, go back to the first right into that parking lot. Walk to the tennis courts lot. The park name is Lime Ridge Open Space. It is part of Walnut Creek Open Space.

Fossil Hill Loop Trail

NOTE: A moderate loop hike of about 6 miles and 1100-foot elevation gain to Castle Rock Park and return. Route will be via the West Fossil Hill Loop, Indian Creek, Briones Mt Diablo, Ginder Gap Loop, Ridge Top, Briones Mt Diablo, Shell Loop and Castle Rock trails to the Park. After a short rest/snack stop, return via Stage Rd, Shell Loop, Briones Mt Diablo, Coyote Pond, Indian Creek and East Fossil Hill Loop trails to the trailhead. Only water at the trailhead, but full facilities at Castle Rock Park. Dogs welcome, off-leash OK on the trails. For GPS or map program location, a nearby address is 192 Sutherland Dr, Walnut Creek.

Castle Rock loop

NOTE: About a 7.5-mile loop hike from Castle Rock Park into Mt Diablo State Park with an elevation gain of approx 1100 feet. Route will be Stage Rd, Burma Rd, Buckeye Trail, and Stage Rd to Little Yosemite Trail where we will take a short rest/snack stop at the picnic tables. Then continue on Stage Rd to the Castle Rock trailhead. Full facilities at Castle Rock Park. Dogs are not allowed in Mt Diablo State Park. Plan on arriving at Castle Rock Park at least 15 minutes early to allow for the walk from the Orchard Staging area if parking is not available at the end of Castle Rock Rd. Trailhead address is 1700 Castle Rock Road.

Shell Ridge - Rockspring Pl entrance

NOTE: A moderate 5.5-mile loop hike with about a 1000-foot elevation gain to Borges Ranch. Route will be past Coyote Pond to Briones Mt Diablo, Ginder Gap, Costanoan, to Sulfer Creek Pond, Sulfer Creek to Flat Top trail to Hanna Lane trail to Borges Ranch. After a short rest/snack stop, return via Borges Ranch, Briones Mt Diablo and Coyote Pond trails to the trailhead. No facilites at the trailhead but full facilities at Borges Ranch. Dogs welcome, off-leash OK on the trails. NOTE: This trailhead is about halfway on Rockspring Pl on the left, not at the end of the road. Nearby address is: 1864 Rockspring Place, Walnut Creek.

OLOFSON RIDGE

NOTE: About a 6-mile loop hike with a 1000-foot elevation gain from Mitchell Canyon to Olofson Peak. Route will be Mitchell Canyon Rd, Black Point Trail, Red Rd, and Olofson Ridge Rd to a point near Olofson Peak. After a short rest/snack stop return via Olofson Ridge Rd, Red Rd, Globe Lily Trail and Mitchell Canyon Rd to the staging area. Full facilities at Mitchell Canyon staging area. No dogs allowed in Mt Diablo State Park. Parking fee at Mitchell Canyon is now $6 - exact change required.

Round Valley Regional Preserve - Hardy Canyon Trail

NOTE: A loop hike of approximately 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1000 feet. The hike starts on the Hardy Canyon Trail and ascends to the high point where we will take a short rest/snack stop and enjoy the view before descending to the Miwok Trail for the 1.6-mile return to the staging area. Briones Reservoir Overlook hike

NOTE: An out-and-back hike from the Briones Overlook staging area to the Bear Creek staging area. About 7 miles with an elevation gain of 900 feet. Restrooms at both staging areas but no water. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. EBMUD hiking permits needed, but up to four guests are allowed for each permit. There should be enough permit holders to accommodate those without them. The Overlook staging area is on Bear Creek Rd about halfway between Camino Pablo and Happy Valley Rds.

Moraga to Las Trampas

NOTE: It is 6 miles to Camino Pablo from hwy 24 and 2 miles on Camino Pablo to Rancho Laguna. Now that a lot of us know where Rancho Laguna is, this should go smoothly. Total of 8 miles and guessing at 1,200 ft of elevation. Remember I blew it on 1/8. Lots of ups and downs. This is isolated terrain. Lots of wildlife here. I have done this hike before. I will not climb Las Trampas Ridge to the comm. tower. If you want to, go for it. That will make it 10 miles total for you folks. Please stay in sight of other hikers. You do not want to get lost in this huge park. Services at Rancho Laguna. Coffee afterwards?

Dublin Hills, Calaveras Ridge Trail

NOTE: A moderate 6-mile loop hike with an estimated elevation gain of 1100 feet. Route will be via Sulfur Creek, Ridge Top, Briones-Mt Diablo, Shell Loop and Stage Road trails to Castle Rock Park. We will take a short rest/snack stop at Castle Rock Park then return over the hill to Bob Pond, then Hanna Lane, and Costanoan trails to the trailhead. There are restrooms, water and picnic tables at both Bob Pond and Castle Rock Park. Dog friendly, off-leash OK on the trails. These Event Notes supersede the Trail Notes.

Valle Vista to Redwood

NOTE: This is a 7.2 mile hike from the Valle Vista Staging area in Moraga to Redwood Regional Park and back. Valle Vista is EBMUD land so bring your hiking permits (not required). All vehicles must be registered at the kiosk. The parking lot is limited to 30 vehicles. There is no overflow parking, so it is NOT suitable for large gatherings. I will have several copies of the trail route to give out before the hike. One porta potty and no water at VV. Water and restrooms at RR. No dogs but rabbits are OK. We will snack and rest at Redwood.
