Past Hikes
Previous Hikes Included:
(Click on the appropriate link below for more information.)
NOTE: Goal is to hike about 6 miles, or 2-3 hours. If it rains, hike will be cancelled. Phone my cell phone after 8:30am for a status update.
NOTE: This is a 6 mile hike with 1,000' of elevation gain at Las Trampas in Danville. It is not easy. Trail is a fire road. Could be some mud in two locations, but I doubt it. Hike should take about 2.5 hours. Should be sunny and cool, so dress for it. EBMUD hiking permit holders are very welcome. Directions from 680N or S. Exit at Crow Canyon and go west (where the sun sets) almost 2 miles to Bollinger Canyon Rd (traffic light). Don't miss it or you will end up in Castro Valley. Right turn and about 5.5 miles to the end of the road. Staging area is on the left. Restrooms and water there. This hike will make us hungry, so please join us for lunch at nearby Erik's Deli.
NOTE: This hike will last roughly 3 hours with a lunch stop.
NOTE: This will be a 3.5 hour hike rather than 2.5. I can take 4 people beside myself in my car. Please call me beforehand to arrange carpool/pickup from Rockridge BART. Remember that parking at BART is not advised without express written permission.
HEAVY RAIN CANCELS hike.
NOTE: We have a longer and shorter hike along the same out & back trail (not a loop). We will hike the west side of the reservoir for 8 miles total, for those that want do the longer hike. Shorter hike will be 5-6 miles total. Be prepared for showers. There is minimal elevation gain. Restroom at the staging area, but no water. We need hikers with EBMUD hiking permits. This is a great trail to run and is also dog friendly. Both are encouraged.
NOTE: The attraction is the wild pig traps that Boundry Oaks golf couse has set out to trap the pigs. I don't want to meet them and that is unlikely. Flush toilets, water, picnic tables.
NOTE: Duration will be from 2 to 2.5 hours. We will heading south to start.
NOTE: We will hike a little way up Donner canyon and Median ridge, gaining approx. 700 ft elevation,
and then return along back canyon, with a detour over to the Mitchell canyon staging area. I'm estimating the distance covered at 6-7 miles. Mist and intermitant sprinkles will not cause me to cancel the hike. Heavy rain will.
NOTE: PLEASANTON RESIDENTS NEEDED FOR TRAIL ACCESS!!!
There are flush toilets, water, and picnic tables at the staging area. Bring snacks.
NOTE: EBMUD hiking permits required!
NOTE: The staging area is located between the cities of Moraga and Canyon. it is a total of 6.5 miles and it does have the steep climb from mile 4 to about mile 5. The hike will take between 2 and 2.5 hours to complete. If people are interested in going for something to eat afterwards, we can make that decision once we return to the parking lot. I plan on waiting for approximately 15-20 minutes after completing the hike for any remaining hikers, but after that, I'm outta there ;-) I would classify this as a challenging hikeĀ
not too difficult or strenuous, but does have some uneven terrain and can be hilly. I'd advise people to not do this hike unless they have hiked before and feel comfortable with their ability to handle hills and distance. I would also advise people that if we have rain before 10/22, that they may want to bring a change of shoes since the trail will most likely be muddy.
NOTE: We will meet after the hike at Melo's Pizza and Pasta located at : 1660 Contra Costa Blvd., Pleasant Hill. For directions, click here.
NOTE: Bring a flashlight!
NOTE: This is the Lafayette Reservoir hike, but starting from a residential section. Expect some steepness, and there is one section that might frighten those with a fear of heights, but it's a really brief section. I will have limited time to complete this hike so I may back out early. Figure total distance to be anywhere from 2 to 8 miles, depending on personal preferences and route chosen. Since I have limited time today, my plan is to hike the Rim trail, bypassing the Rheem Reservoir and Canyon portions. Total distance should be 6-7 miles round trip.
NOTE: For seasoned hikers only, please! Not a beginner hike.
NOTE: I have never hiked this spot before, but eager to explore it! Who's game to explore with me? :) ... Look for the white Honda Accord.
NOTE: We'll meet at the trail head at 4:00 pm (directions below), and do a 2.2 mile loop on Joaquin Ranch trail to Briones to Mt Diablo trail, to Fossil hill trail and return via Indian creek trail.
You can call my cell phone with any questions 510-774-6972
NOTE: Catch the sunset from 2500 feet! A great warmup to Half Dome, too! :)
NOTE: This hike is doggie friendly.
NOTE: A 5 mile loop to Las Trampas Peak, and back along the Ridge. A moderate hike. Easier than Wall Point. Total elevation gain of 1,000' , and 80% sun. There are picnic tables at the trailhead, but I'm going to Erik's Deli for lunch.
NOTE: This hike is 6.1 miles and is very similiar to the Rim Trail at Lafayette Res. Lots of ups and downs, but the 2nd half is in the shade. This hike is less strenuous than "eldeberry" but not by much.
NOTE: We will meet at the beach parking lot by 11:00, and hike from the beach up to Muir Woods and take a lunch break. (This hike up took me 2 and a half hours the last time I hiked it.) We'll then head down the mountain back to the beach. The total distance is 10 miles, and is a great workout!
NOTE: We start from the Macedo Ranch staging area of Mt Diablo State Park and hike north over small hills to the Borges Ranch. There are picnic tables there (shade and sun), flush toilets and water. There is also a small animal farm at Borges. We will picnic there, and then return to Macedo. This is an easy hike with total elevation gain of ~250' and ~6 miles total. The hike is 99% in the sun.
NOTE: We will start at the Waddell Creek trailhead (200ft) at about 10:30. We will mosey around there and find another trail back if possible. Please use the Member's Only Email List to coordinate carpools.
NOTE: I need people with EBMUD hiking permits, so we can go briefly behind the comm. tower. Will stay in the park if we don't have enough. Afterwards, we can caravan to Erik's Deli for goodies.
NOTE: This is a 5-6 mile hike with 1,000' of elevation gain. All sun, except the last 2 miles of beautiful forest. If I can get enough folks with EBMUD hiking permits, we will go briefly into EBMUD territory. Otherwise, we will stay in Las Trampas. The views from behind the Comm. tower are astounding. Water and toilets at the trailhead. Picnic tables at the trailhead. There's also Ericks Deli a few miles away for lunch afterwards.
NOTE: Paved portion of trail is 4 miles in and back (8 total), however, I will be hiking the dirt portion as well, so this could easily turn into a 12+ mile hike for those adventurous types. :) It will be a HOT day, so if you plan to continue on to the dirt trail with me, be sure to bring PLENTY of water! :)
NOTE: Bring: Lunch, water and jacket. Anyone who would rather meet at Tiburon or on Angel Island, please contact me and we will look to connect.
NOTE: 2.2+ or 3.2+ Round trip hike to the Lagoon, then to the Coast and back. This is an out and back hike, with flat terrain.
We will meet at the Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor's center at 11:30AM. From there we will drive together to the Abbott's Lagoon parking lot about 15 minutes from the Ranger station/Bear Valley visitor's center.
If time, interest, and carpool arrangements allow, we can make a day of it, for those that would like to stay, and do some further exploring of Point Reyes after our hike. Ideas include tide pooling at Kehoe beach (if we get there before high tide at 16:29), looking for Tule Elk at Tomales Point, or visiting the Earthquake trail, just to name a few.
Contact June to sign up for a NorthBay carpool no later than Friday by 5:00 pm: 510-774-6972
NOTE: Bring plenty of water, snacks, Flashlight/headlamp and a light Jacket. Rain cancels.
NOTE: Opportunity to socialize after the hike, lunch/snack in Walnut Creek
NOTE: The hike is about 6-7 miles round trip (out and back) with very little elevation change. A nice easy hike but with some streams to traverse; you might want to bring a change of shoes and socks for after the hike.
NOTE: Bring plenty of water, snacks/lunch and a camera.
NOTE: Same location as our Table Top hike, but starting from a different side of Briones.
NOTE: This is a 2 hour hike... With hopefully some time at the end at the beach to picnic. :) Dressing in layers is highly recommended, as temperatures may be cooler by the coast. Possibility of fog in the late afternoon/evening as well. Bring food/snack, if you wish to enjoy either along the trail or at the beach itself. :)
NOTE: Look for the orange bike flag again. Hike will start at 11:30.
NOTE: For anyone interested in hanging out and grabbing a much well deserved bite to eat afterwards, meet at Mangia Ristorante Pizzeria in Lafayette, located at 975 Moraga Road. For directions,
click here. Their phone number is (925) 284-3081.
NOTE: We'll meet at the trail head at 5:45pm and do a 1.75 mile loop on Joaquin Ranch trail to Briones to Mt Diablo trail, to fossil hill trail and return via Indian creek trail.
NOTE: Bring plenty of water, snacks/lunch and a camera.
Car Pool Option
San Ramon Whole Foods complex. Meet at 10:00 am by the Cingular Store. (Exit 680 South bound at Bollinger Canyon Road, Left at stop light onto Bollinger, Left at second stop light onto Sunset Road, Left into wholes foods complex. Drive till you see Target, make a left and park near Cingular/Baja Fresh.
NOTE: LOCATION & TIME CHANGE!
We'll divide into two groups: those that want to do this trail as advertised, and those who are up for a little exploration at the top. The trail as advertised is rather short, but the first part may very well kick your @#[email protected]! :)
NOTE: Last sunday's hike was 6.4 miles, with only 200' of elevation gain. This is only slightly more difficult.
NOTE: Carpool meets at 10am, arriving at the park at 11am.
There are two parking areas, the one we will start at is the
rectangular one up top to the right of the entrance kiosk.
The hike should be about 4-5 miles, but very leisurely because there
are lots of cool buildings and things. So it could take until about 4pm,
getting home around 5pm I'd estimate.
NOTE: Let's explore it together!
Carpoolers: Look for my blue Jetta with the flashing white strobe light.
NOTE: We will meet outside the park in order to carpool and save money on the vehicle park fee. We'll meet at 1:30 in the parking lot of the Applebee's restaurant at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove in Walnut Creek. I will have an orange bike flag on my car so people can spot us easily.
If you choose to go directly to the trailhead, we will begin hiking by 2:00 at the Angel Kerley Road trailhead marker on North Gate Road at the hair-pin turn. It is grid 5D for those that have a Mt. Diablo map. Otherwise use the following internet link(s) for a Mt. Diablo map.
NOTE: Meet by the flagpole at the car entrance Kiosk (middle of parking lot).
NOTE: This will be a carpool to join a Sierra Club hike at 11AM. This is a Mother's Day hike with cards for moms and chocolate for everyone, courtesy of the leader. 7 to 8 miles with an 800 foot elevation gain. Annadel State Park is in the Sonoma Valley.
NOTE: Meet at the end of Marshall Drive. This will be a hike up Shell ridge at sunset.
The moon will rise past 9:13 p.m. above Mt. Diablo. expect some climbs and descents. The elevation gain will be roughly 500 ft. We will hike about 2.5 hours at a moderate pace with periodic stops. I'm guessing that the mileage will total 5 miles. For those that are interested, we can stop in downtown Walnut Creek afterward for coffee, soda, etc. Bring your flashlights, good shoes and good attitudes for a last spring fling with the moon. Anyone that has a moon story or would like to has moon mad information can share it on the hike.
NOTE: This hike will last 3 to 3.5 hours including a lunch stop. It will be virtually flat. We will follow along Pine creek, using stepping stones at times to cross it as we walk past the Castle rocks rock formation. Many parts of this hike are shady.
NOTE:

NOTE: In case of muddy conditions, we will hike the lower paved trail.
NOTE: This is a "rain or shine" hike. The forecast for the next several days does not look good.
NOTE: We meet in the parking lot (Look for the "old" red Civic Hatchback) -- Rain or shine. Water and non flush toilets there. Also picnic tables for snacking at the end of the hike. For those interested in hanging out for a bit for lunch afterward, I can Lead you to Erik's Deli in San Ramon (a short distance away).
This is a great "cardio hike". 1,000' elevation gain in the first mile. That's close to a 20% slope. We are hiking up to the comm. tower, and then left along the Ridge Trail. All the effort is in the first mile.
NOTE: Look for the vintage red Civic hatchback. 233K and still going. This hike is like the Contra Costa Canal hike from 1/29, but not even close to last sunday's hike at Inspiration Point. Bring a lunch or snack. Hope to see you there.
