Event Notes:

Choose a 6 mile 800 foot or 7 mile 1,200 foot elevation gain loop hike around Don Castro Reservoir and into Five Canyons Open Space. Route will be Whispering Creek Trail, Bay Area Ridge Trail, Deer Canyon Trail, Sandstone Trail, Diamond View Trail to Five Canyons Park stopping behind home plate to rest/snack/enjoy the view. Return on Five Canyons Parkway, Shady Canyon Trail with short hike continuing to the end of Shady Canyon Trail, retraces back on the Bay Area Ridge Trail, right across the bridge and immediate left on Ridgetop Trail back to the parking area. Long hike also returns on Shady Canyon Trail but turns right, uphill on Newt Pond Trail, left on Bay Area Ridge Trail, crosses back over Five Canyons Parkway, retraces back on Bay Area Ridge Trail, right across the bridge and immediate left on Ridgetop Trail back to the cars. Water and bathrooms at Don Castro trailhead and also at Five Canyons Park.

Don Castro is a relatively small park which provides easy hiking access to Five Canyons Open Space and Cull Canyon Recreation Area.

Don Castro Regional Recreation Area, 22400 Woodroe Ave., Hayward, 94541. From San Ramon via Crow Canyon Road which becomes Grove Way as you pass under HWY 580. Take first left onto Center St., left onto Kelly St. (Val's Burgers), left onto Woodroe Ave. Woodroe Ave. ends in the Don Castro parking area. We will meet near the Park Office/bathrooms. From Dublin, HWY 580 West, take the Castro Valley Exit, turn left onto E. Castro Valley Blvd., left onto Grove Way and follow info above. From Oakland HWY 580 East, take the Grove Way/Crow Canyon Exit, right onto Grove Way and follow info above.
