Event Notes:

The first of three increasingly difficult hikes culminating in a hike to Mt. Diablo Summit. A 9.5-mile out-and-back hike from Castle Rock Park to BBQ Terrace with about a 1600-foot elevation gain. And a possibility of increasing the distance and elevation gain by returning via Wall Point instead of straight back. Route is Stage and BBQ Terrace Roads. A short rest/snack stop at BBQ Terrace before the return. Water and restrooms at Castle Rock Park and BBQ Terrace. No dogs are allowed in Mt. Diablo State Park. Meet at the restrooms about ¼ mile in from the trailhead. Trailhead address is 1700 Castle Rock Road, Walnut Creek. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early in case you have to park in the Orchard area and walk ¼ mile to the trailhead.

Trail Notes:

This is an exploratory hike in that I'm not entirely sure of the mileage, but it is AT LEAST 15 MILES. Please only attempt this hike if you tolerate heat and distance well. In addition, there is a pretty steep climb up to BBQ Terrace - between 1000-1200 feet. We will start at Castle Rock park and go through the picnic area to the open space. We'll follow Old Stage Road to BBQ Terrace and then return via Wall Point Road back to Old Stage Road. Plan on at least 5 hours. We'll take a 15 minute break at BBQ Terrace for a snack and restroom breaks. Bring plenty of water. Hiking poles are recommended as are walkie talkies, GPS devices, and anything else you need to keep you safe.

Directions to Trailhead:

Limited parking is available at the END of Castle Rock Road. PASS the horse stables. If you park at the Orchard Staging area, you will need to walk about .5 mile to the Castle Rock Park staging area.
