The first of our yearly triad of Mt. Diablo Park hikes, culminating in a hike to the summit. This first hike goes to Deer Flat, an out-and-back distance of about 7 ½ miles with an elevation gain of almost 1800 feet. An added option for this hike will be to return to the staging area via Eagle Peak, adding about a mile to the distance and a couple of hundred additional feet of elevation gain. Full facilities at Mitchell Canyon trailhead. No dogs allowed in the State Park. Parking fee is now $6, exact change. Trailhead address is 96 Mitchell Canyon Road, Clayton, CA 94517.
Contact: HowardFrom I-680 North or Hwy 24 East, exit at Ygnacio Valley Road. Turn right (east) on Ygnacio Valley Road to Clayton Road in Concord (approx 7.5 miles) and turn right (east).
From I-680 South, exit at Treat Blvd. Turn left (south) at the stop light, then immediate left (east) at the next stop light (Treat Blvd). Follow Treat all the way up the hill into Concord (approx 8 miles). Turn right (east) onto Clayton Road.
Follow Clayton Road to Mitchell Canyon Road and turn right (south). The road ends in the park at a parking lot.
