Briones Reservoir Overlook hike

Briones Reservoir Overlook hike
City: Orinda/Lafayette
Park: Briones Reservoir

Sunday, August 08, 2010 @ 9:00 AM

Event Notes:

This hike will go to Bear Creek staging area. It is so similiar to Chabot, only shorter (7 miles). Almost all of it in the shade through the forest. It's an out and back hike. Potties at both staging areas but no water. No dogs on this trail. I will bring more cold drinks to share. If you have an EBMUD hiking permit, please bring it. Otherwise just show up. Permit holders are allowed guests.

Trail Notes:

This is an out and back single trail hike about 6-7 miles round trip on the Bear Creek Trail. It could go longer if we go out through the gate rather than turn around. For distance purposes, to the gate and back is slightly more than 6 miles. Going beyond the gate only takes you another 1/2 mile to a 2nd gate that doesn't appear to have any access to...however, it does take you to the Bear Creek Staging area. So going to the first gate would yield a round trip distance of about 6 miles total, whereas continuing on to the second gate yields instead about 7 miles total.

Directions to Trailhead:

From highway 24 westbound take the Orinda exit. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Orinda Village/Richmond and merge onto Camino Pablo. Continue on Camino Pablo for 2.2 miles to Bear Creek Road.

From highway 24 eastbound take the exit toward Moraga. Turn left onto Camino Pablo and continue for 2.3 miles to Bear Creek Road.

At Bear Creek Road (traffic signal) turn right and drive 1.4 miles to the Briones Overlook staging area on the left. It is very near the top of a big hill. Easy to miss, so drive slow. Big parking lot, small entrance.

Other Fees: EBMUD permit required
