Trail Notes:

This is a 7.4 miles moderate to strenuous hike with a total elevation gain of 1500 feet. Explore deep canyons, sweeping grassy slopes, and open ridge tops in this remote foothill country covered with colorful wildflowers in spring. This hike features an abundance of gigantic, graceful, and distinguished coast live oaks that are splendid stand-alone specimens. The landscape has been deliberately kept as perhaps it was ages ago, with groves of century old olive trees currently being restored. Most of the sandstone and cobble gravels that form the rocks of Pleasanton Ridge evolved from up to 70-million-year-old eroded marine formations deposited in the inland Pacific Ocean. Fossils from marine dwelling snails, clams, oysters, and sand dollars are still found here. Red-tailed hawks, buzzards, and occasionally golden eagles soar above the grasslands searching for ground squirrels and western fence lizards. Western bluebirds and meadowlarks flit about closer to the ground. Mountain bikers and horseback riders use these trails, and dogs are allowed in the park.

Dogs permitted.
