Mitchell Canyon to Juniper Flat

Mitchell Canyon to Juniper Flat
City: Clayton
Park: Mt. Diablo State Park

Sunday, April 19, 2009 @ 9:30 AM

Event Notes:

The hike is 11 miles with 2,400 feet of elevation gain. This hike will not be at a leisurly pace but at our own pace. I estimate 4 hours. Juniper Camp is only 1.8 miles and 850 feet of elevation from the Summit. It is out and back on fireroads. Flush toilets and water at Juniper. The parking fee is now $6. Hopefully the owl is still residing in the tree near the Interpretive Center.

Trail Notes:

This is a beautiful 11.4 mile round trip hike on the north side of Mt. Diablo. While it is not for fast hikers because of the leisurely pace, it is not for beginning hikers either because of the 2400 foot elevation gain. Our route will take us up shady Mitchell Canyon to scenic Deer Flat. After a rest break, we will continue to the picnic tables at Juniper Flat for lunch. We will then return the way we came enjoying spectacular views on the way down. Plan on spending 6 hours for this hike. Also, be sure to bring at least 2 liters of water per person, hat, sun block, and food for snacks and lunch.
