Sunday, April 05, 2009 @ 9:00 AM

Event Notes:

13.2 miles in 75% sun with lots of hills. This is not an easy hike, so please be aware of your ability and stamina. Haven't decided whether to go clockwise or counter-clockwise yet, but will make that decision on Sunday. No dogs are allowed on the Bear Creek trail. An EBMUD permit is required. Please plan on arriving by 9:00 a.m. to sign in. If you do not have a permit, please make arrangements with someone who does. We will start hiking no later than 9:15 a.m. Please bring plenty of water as this hike can be difficult especially if it is very warm on that Sunday. The staging area has a bathroom with a flush toilet, but no other services until we reach the Bear Creek staging area.

Trail Notes:

This is a long hike - 13.1 miles in 50% sun/50% shade - that follows along the beautiful Briones Reservoir. We start out on the Oursan Trail and finish up on the Bear Creek Trail (which does not allow dogs). Minimal elevation gain, but this hike is for experienced hikers only because of the distance. We plan to only stop for one 10-15 minute snack break at about the mid-way point. The Briones Reservoir Overlook Staging area requires the EBMUD permit. Each person with a permit is permitted to have 4 people on their permit. Permits must be carried on the holder of the permit since the Park Rangers sometimes patrol the trails and ask to see it. There is a flushable bathroom at the trailhead. After that, there are no other facilities until we are at the Bear Creek Staging Area (at approximately Mile 9). Bring plenty of water because of the distance.

Directions to Trailhead:

From highway 24 westbound take the Orinda exit. Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Orinda Village/Richmond and merge onto Camino Pablo. Continue on Camino Pablo for 2.2 miles to Bear Creek Road.

From highway 24 eastbound take the exit toward Moraga. Turn left onto Camino Pablo and continue for 2.3 miles to Bear Creek Road.

At Bear Creek Road (traffic signal) turn right and drive 1.4 miles to the Briones Overlook staging area on the left. It is very near the top of a big hill. Easy to miss, so drive slow. Big parking lot, small entrance.

TrailHead Parking Fee: None
Other Fees: EBMUD permit required
