City: Ross/Larkspur
Park: Marin Countywide Bicycle System

Saturday, December 20, 2008 @ 12:00 PM

Event Notes:

Want an easy hike with spectacular scenery and a secret staircase? Secret staircase you're thinking. What is that? Well to find out come along on this easy 6 mile round trip hike on one of Marin County's lesser known bike paths!

We'll hike south from Ross along the bike path by Corte Madera Creek and enjoy views of the bay wetlands and Mt. Tam. Then when we get to Larkspur we'll stop for either pizza at Picco or some genuinely Italian pastries at Emporio Rulli. But you'll probably want to take an optional walk up the secret staircase before or after we eat. Or both. An experience not to be missed!

Meet at the south end of the post office parking lot in Ross by the beginning of the bike path.

Trail Notes:

This is an easy scenic walk on one of Marin County's unknown bike paths. It starts on the south side of the post office parking lot in Ross and follows Corte Madera Creek to Larkspur for nearly three miles. There is a little bit of everything on this walk: wooded creeks, expansive bay wetlands and spectacular views of Mt. Tam. However, one of the most interesting features is the secret staircase in Larkspur. While a walk up the staircase is optional, it is an experience you probably won't want to miss! Come along and find out why!

There are no public restrooms in Ross, but there is a cafe and a general store.

Directions to Trailhead:

From the East Bay, take I-80 east toward Sacramento. Then take I-580 west towards Point Richmond/San Rafael. Cross the San Rafael Bridge (toll). Exit Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Drive west on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard through Larkspur for about 2 miles. You will see U.S. 101. Don't get on this freeway. Instead, stay in the lane that says Kentfield/Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. After passing underneath the freeway on this lane, continue driving west. You will still be on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Drive for about another 3 miles. You will reach an intersection with Lagunitas Road (by the Marin Art and Garden Center). Turn left onto Lagunitas Road. Make another immediate left onto Ross Commons and into the town of Ross. Park in a space on the street that has no time limit or in the parking lot on the left side of the street by the post office.

TrailHead Parking Fee: None
