Experienced Hikers Only. Meet at Mitchell Canyon Staging area. Parking is $3 -- exact change needed. This is a strenuous hike - we will be climbing approximtely 3,000 feet and traveling 12-14 miles. We are starting a little earlier than usual to ensure we return before dark. Hike is co-sponsored by the MDIA. Arrange your own car pools with members of the group. Torrential rain cancels/light rain does not.

Trail Notes:

Experienced fit hikers only. This hike is approximately 14-15 miles, with a 3400 foot elevation gain. Dogs are NOT permitted on any of the Mount Diablo trails.

Meet at Mitchell Canyon Staging area. From Mitchell Canyon, rest/snack @ Deer Flat. From Deer Flat to Juniper Campground (pit stop) water refills, then single file up the paved road to the summit. Lunch break at the Summit . Return down Meridian Ridge to Murchio Gap and return on Back Creek Trail and over to the staging area.

Mount Diablo has dynamic panoramic views. The view atop Diablo encompasses more square miles than any other view in the United States. On a clear day, you can see beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, to the Farallon Islands; southeast to the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton at 4,213 feet; south to Mount Loma Prieta in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 3,791 feet, north is Mount Saint Helena in the Coastal Range at 4,344 feet and still farther north is Mount Lassen in the Cascades at 10,466 feet. North and east of Mount Diablo the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers meet as the Delta. To the east beyond the central valley, the last of the snow of the Sierra Nevada can be seen .

Directions to Trailhead:

From 680/24 east, take YGNACIO VALLEY RD exit. Turn right going northeast 6.9 miles to PINE HOLLOW RD. Make a right turn at the gas station and go 1.7 miles to MITCHELL CANYON RD. Proceed right for 1.3 miles to Mt DIABLO STATE PARK entrance. Pay $3 entrance fee at ticket machine (self service envelopes in the iron ranger, so exact change is needed). Proceed to parking area and meeting place.
