Trail Notes:

Dutra and Sky Ranch (4 mile partial loop) The Dutra Ranch, Sky Ranch multi-use trail ascends to the top of Franklin Ridge. If you are in the mood for a hike with spectacular, world class views, consider hiking on this Muir Heritage Land Trust property. Take Franklin Rd. a couple of miles to Dutra Road. make a left and park your car on the left after you cross under the train trestle. There is a gate on the left in front of the horse corrals. The first mile is a gentle uphill climb through a wooded canyon. After a mile there is another gate that is the beginning of a two mile loop trail that makes you feel as though you are on top of the world. On a good day you can see the Sierras. All of this land is owned by the Muir Heritage Land Trust for you to enjoy.

Dogs ARE permitted on this trail, even off leash as long as they remain under voice control, however, not until we get to the actual Dutra Loop Trail and enter onto the Muir Heritage Land Trust property. The first mile of this hike will be on a public road, with private property on either side. Dogs are NOT permitted off leash during this first mile stretch.

An offshoot of the Dutra Loop Trail is a brand new trail completed in June of 2007 called the Tina Batt trail.

Directions to Trailhead:

From Dublin/San Ramon, take Hwy 680 North to Hwy 4 West. Or from Berkeley/San Francisco, take I-80 east to Hwy 4 east.

From Highway 4 eastbound, exit Alhambra Ave. Turn right onto Alhambra Avenue. Make your first right onto Franklin Canyon Road. From Highway 4 westbound, exit Alhambra Ave. Turn left onto Alhambra Avenue. Turn right onto Franklin Canyon Road.

Then continue on Franklin Canyon for one mile turn left onto Dutra Road. The trailhead, marked Contra Costa County Feeder Trail #1 is on the left about one-tenth mile up the road. Watch for the yellow END sign on the left just before the stables. Park on the left side before the trailhead and stables. There is room for about three cars here. Parking is limited, so carpooling is advised! (Additional roadside parking spots can be found along Franklin Canyon Road. The feeder trail leads up about one mile to the gate at the entrance of the Sky Ranch property (by foot-cars not allowed). There is a kiosk here with signs and a map.

Due to limited parking at the trailhead itself, a good potential spot to arrange carpools from is the Mount Wanda parking lot, located at the corner of Alhambra Avenue and Franklin Canyon Road (on the way to the trailhead). For additional parking, use the shoulder of Franklin Canyon Road itself. For those seeking to pre-arrange carpools or ride shares ahead of time, use the Member's Only list to do so.
