Starting at9:30 am from Skyline Gate, this is a moderate 8-mile 1200-ft or shorter 6.5-mile 1000-ft hike to Redwood Bowl. Please download and print out the route map here.
Route is left on Stream Trail, right on Tres Sendas Trail, left on Star Trail, left on French Trail. Short hike option turns right at Fern Trail junction and ascends to West Ridge Trail. Long hike continues on French Trail, turns right on Chown Trail and ascends to West Ridge Trail. Both hikes turn right on West Ridge Trail and continue to Redwood Bowl.
After a short rest/snack stop, return back on West Ridge Trail, left on Madrone Trail, left on French Trail all the way to West Ridge Trail. Then right to return to Skyline Gate.Please download and print out the route map here. Restrooms and water at Skyline Gate and Redwood Bowl. Dogs OK but must be on leash on the Stream Trail. Trailhead details: Medium size parking lot, but often fills quickly in the morning. Carpooling is advised. No admission or parking fees here -- at the main park entrance, the day use fee is $5, with a $2 fee for dogs. Pit toilets at northeastern edge of lot. Maps available at information signboard. Drinking water and pay phone in parking lot. There are designated handicapped parking spots, and one pit toilet is wheelchair accessible. Trail access is not blocked, and wheelchair users should be able to navigate a short distance on either East Ridge or West Ridge Trail. AC Transit bus #60 gets you within walking distance of this trailhead; bus #53 stops at the Chabot Science Center, and is also an option.
From Highway 24 in Alameda County, exit Highway 13 south. After about 3 miles, exit at Joaquin Miller. At the foot of the exit ramp, make a left, then take the next left, and then go straight onto Joaquin Miller. Drive uphill about 1 mile, then turn left onto Skyline (there's a brown parks sign before the turn, and a traffic light). Drive about 3 miles (past the Chabot Space Center), then turn right into the parking lot.
From Westbound Highway 24 in Contra Costa County, exit Fish Ranch Road (this is the last exit before the tunnel). Turn Right at the stop sign and drive uphill on Fish Ranch Road about 1 mile, then turn left onto Grizzly Peak Blvd (toward Sibley). Drive 2.4 miles, then turn left onto Skyline Boulevard. Drive 2 miles on Skyline Boulevard, then turn left into the parking lot.
